This book chapter provides an overview of Creative Commons licensing as the legally and operationally effective means by which open access to public sector or government information may be implemented in practice by governments in Australia and elsewhere. The following topics are dealt with:
- managing copyright to create a commons of public sector information (PSI);
- Creative Commons (CC) licences;
- the advantages of Using Creative Commons licences for managing PSI;
- legal and operational issues relevant to CC licences and PSI; and
- the Government Information Licensing Framework (GILF) project: A Case Study.
